That got us thinking: Which central Ohio stadiums are our favorite places to watch a high school football game? EachWe have covered hundreds of games around the state in our careers, but central Ohio is home, and there’s no other place like it on a Friday night. Here are our picks.My top criteria here is that the stadium has to have personality. It can’t feel like anywhere else.
My time covering sports in Knox County was mainly during the COVID-19 pandemic, so I never got to see a true representation of what a Friday night is like on Tough Street. I can only imagine the turnout for a Danville-East Knox game. The Dawgs finished with winning records in 2003, 2005 and 2008 before a failed levy forced the cancellation of fall sports in 2009 and left the stadium at Grove City dark for the football season. That void was felt by the community as an important Friday night event was taken away.
The stands are filled to capacity like most rural school districts, where virtually the entire town shuts down for three-plus hours to cheer for the hometown team. The fans spill into standing-room only formation beside a chain-link fence surrounding the field. Parking is a little tricky sometimes, particularly if you can’t get there early, but it’s worth a walk if you need to park on a nearby street or on the open grass east of the stadium .
