NEW DELHI – Leaders from Western countries and Japan found themselves on the defensive as they faced questions over why they stopped short of directly criticising Russia for the war in Ukraine in aThe Delhi Declaration, which went through 15 drafts and 200 hours of negotiations according to the Indian side, dropped the direct condemnation of Russia that found a place in the 2022 Bali Declaration, which referred to Russian aggression against Ukraine.
At a separate press conference, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said: “On Russian aggression in Ukraine, Japan pressed for immediate withdrawal of Russian troops and realisation of just and durable peace in Ukraine.”“Russia got what it wanted because of the watered-down reference to the Ukraine conflict in the G-20 declaration,” said Dr Rajeswari Pillai Rajagopalan of New Delhi-based think-tank Observer Research Foundation.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who represented Russia, thanked India for the declaration, saying Moscow definitely didn’t expect it. “I think most of the countries are looking for economic growth and enhancing sustainable development goals. We are now getting back to economic issues,” said Professor Srikanth Kondapalli from Jawaharlal Nehru University.Food inflation remains a major area of concern for developing countries, also referred to as the Global South.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said India will hold a virtual summit meeting in November to further take stock of various issues.
