Great news, drivers! All lanes of westbound I-80 between Interstate Highway 780 in Vallejo and state Highway 4 in Hercules reopened ahead of schedule, Caltrans said.
The project involved repaving lanes on westbound Interstate 80 from I-780 in Vallejo to State Route 4 in Hercules. Detours were in place during the holiday weekend.
Earlier on the day, there was frustration among drivers. Elvis Young from Vallejo made a doughnut run to Walnut Creek in his yellow Pontiac convertible but got stuck in the backup he was trying to avoid. "I was trying but I wanted Krispy Kreme so I had to go out there and it was all traffic," said Young.Extensive detours around the closure were in place but by early Monday afternoon, backups began. The I-680 Cordelia Junction near Fairfield was slow and go. Highway 37 was like a parking lot."We're headed back to San Francisco, now we have to go through Martinez," said Cheveyo Amador from San Francisco.
Caltrans carried out major pavement repair work on the stretch of roadway, including pouring more than 9,000 cubic yards of concrete on three miles of lanes.
