GMB Scotland said its members were being balloted on industrial action

West Lothian Council workers could trigger a summer of strike action on the eve of the general election unless they receive an improved pay offer, a union has warned.

It comes after Cosla, which represents councils, tabled a two-stage pay offer which runs for 18 months. It gives a two per cent increase for the first six months and an additional two per cent for a further 12 months. “This election, like all the others, is about promises of a better tomorrow - but those promises do not pay our members’ bills today,” she said.

Local authority members in home and residential care were already voting on industrial action if there was no acceptable offer with the ballot due to close on June 19 Keir Greenaway, GMB Scotland senior organiser in public services, warned a summer of strikes seems inevitable but could still be averted.

“We do not need any more empty promises and excuses. We need council leaders and the Scottish Government to find a way of paying our members fairly.
