Sisters Nyrobi and Chaya Beckett-Messam, known as a black female artists in alternative music, have been nominated for the Rising Star and Live Performance Awards. Their latest release features punk-rap artist Delilah Bon and they have upcoming performances at Reading and Spotify's Anti-Prom. The duo received funding from the NextGen initiative and their nominations are a reflection of their hard work and support from those around them.
The West Bridgford duo, made up of sisters Nyrobi, 19, and Chaya Beckett-Messam, 16, have been carving a name for themselves as black female artists in the alternative music space after officially forming just last year.
The Youth Music Awards is headed by Youth Music, the UK’s leading young people’s music charity. The duo were recipients of the NextGen fund initiative, a grant specifically aimed at young artists whose lack of finance constitutes an obstacle to their success. The award nominations are proof that they are doing something right.
“These awards are going to elevate us and we’ll be able to network with people there. Sponsors are there like Doc Marten, Ticketmaster, TikTok…” “And YouTube”, Chaya added, with a grin, “it’s going to be massive.” Many alternative bands are often labelled as such rather lazily, but ALT BLK ERA are one of those who are genuinely difficult to put into a box, something that Nyrobi and Chaya agree with. They grew up with “traditionally Black music like Soul, R&B, reggae” but were trying to express themselves in a more irascible way.
