Wes Anderson, Dominique de Menil's former assistant and more share favorite memories of the Menil
Menil Collection visitors stand in front of “New Stars ” 1977-82, part of the retrospective of Meret Oppenheim’s work, titled “My Exhibition.”Mention the name Menil, and Houstonians have a story to tell — either about the museum’s founders, Dominique and John de Menil, or the Menil Collection itself. The art institution first opened in 1987; today the 30-acre campus in Montrose is home to some 19,000 paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, photographs and rare books.
“The Menil opened on the June 4, 1987, and the night before we had a very large, black-tie seated dinner. Three presidents’ wives were there,” Dominique de Menil’s former assistant, Elsian Cozens, recalled. “There were 640 people, including world-class art collectors, heads of state, scientists and luminaries in the art world....
“The house we lived in stood on the very spot where the renowned Rothko Chapel’s Welcome Center is,” she said. “I’m a practicing artist who began visiting the Menil as a teenager. It was and still is one of the greatest aspects of my visual and creative education.” Once, Andre Leon Tally arranged for a group of socialites to sift through Dominique de Menil’s fashion archives. The late Vogue fashion editor-at-large had the women wear gloves while he quizzed them on the history of each garment. “Of course, he knew where and when she wore all of them,” Dr. Yvonne Cormier shared during Saturday’s gala.
