Why buzzy weight-loss drugs are the next craze for healthcare startups
While WeightWatchers' acquisition of Sequence could allow the weight-loss company to course correct, the move comes with significant risk, Michael Lasser, a UBS analyst, said in a note about the deal Tuesday.A Found ad on Facebook recommends alternative medications the startup prescribes.
Lasser added that the Sequence acquisition was a dramatic switch for WeightWatchers' branding, which has traditionally pushed users to focus on diet and exercise, rather than medications. Shifting that marketing could add another hurdle for WeightWatchers' attempts to recover from its membership decline, Lasser wrote.
But for some companies, stepping into prescribing these new weight-loss medications seems to simply be the natural next step for growth. "If you have to acquire something to get a platform, your risk is a lot higher," SVB Securities' Davis said.
