A dramatic cooling — and perhaps even some rain — were in store for the Bay Area this weekend after a record-breaking week full of heat.

With the month of October in its latter half and leaves beginning to change colors around the Bay Area, weather more reminiscent of a traditional autumn could start to take shape this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

As a drop in temperatures goes further into the 60s and low 70s on Saturday and Sunday, a hint of rain could come with it. The NWS projected about a 40-60 percent chance of precipitation during the day on Sunday — though rain totals weren’t likely to reach more than one-tenth of an inch. As the rain clouds clear, temperatures could briefly shoot back up to the high 70s and low 80s on Monday and Tuesday, but forecasts project them to come back down to a cool level by the end of next week.A classic El Niño winter is expected this year, forecasters say.
