The Prime Minister has been weighing up the future of the Home Secretary after she made a series of divisive claims about pro-Palestinian protests without approval from No 10
The Home Secretary has been criticised for controversial interventions about pro-Palestinian marches and how to handle homelessness in recent weeks, although she ison Thursday, she said the Metropolitan Police were “playing favourites” by allowing demonstrations over Gaza which she calls “hate marches,” while policing more right-wing causes more aggressively.
An MP from the centrist wing of the Tory party said: “She should be sacked. She’s trying to get herself sacked and Rishi should oblige. It’s already reflecting very badly on him.” But another senior backbencher said: “He is too weak to sack her.” Sir Keir Starmer said: “He’s got a Home Secretary who is out of control and he is too weak to do anything about it. That’s the worst of all combinations. And that’s why across the country, repeatedly, people are coming up to me and saying we just need change now. We’ve just had enough of this.”
The Home Secretary faces another major political test on Wednesday next week, when the Supreme Court will rule on whether the policy of sending asylum seekers to Rwanda to be processed and resettled is legal. If the court vetoes the scheme, the Government will be forced to revisit its agenda on immigration.
Priti Patel, who preceded Ms Braverman as Home Secretary, made an oblique reference to the row while giving evidence to the Covid-19 inquiry, saying: “Throughout the pandemic I felt I spent a great deal of time reminding my colleagues of the role of policing… operational independence, and that we as politicians are not there to dictate directly to the police as to when to arrest people or enforce the law.
George Osborne claimed that the Prime Minister had already considered sacking his Home Secretary, saying on his podcast: “I know that Rishi Sunak has on a couple of occasions come very close to getting rid of Suella Braverman in reshuffles in the last year, and he hasn’t done so.”
