We went to Lancashire's oldest pub and were taken back in time through stories of rebellion and ghosts
Its thatched roof gleams under a yellow moon - and the love story behind it is like something straight out of Outlander.
Outside, the pub boasts about its own history with a sign reading 'The oldest inn in Lancashire'. Then, stepping into the Grade II* listed building on a dark autumn evening, feels a bit like travelling back in time, sampling the watering holes very own history. Inside, you’re greeted with instant warmth, roaring fires, low ceilings, wooden beams and a veritable warren of passages and cosy little rooms.
She says: “The soldier somehow got separated from the rest of the platoon, ended up being injured, and the innkeeper’s daughter took him in and nursed him back to health, then they got married and they renamed the pub in his honour. Keeping my eyes well and truly peeled for things that go bump in the pub, I ask if there’s any non-alcoholic beer. I’m surprised to be presented with various possibilities - Erdinger, Heineken or Old Mout Fruit Cider. I plump for the Heineken, and spot the three beers on tap are Shropshire Gold, Tetleys and Plum Porter.
Locals say the building served as a blacksmiths, while other rooms could have been a cattle shed, but a beer house was always on site, while underground, medieval tunnels are rumoured to run to nearby St Catherine’s Chapel, known locally as Lydiate Abbey, which was ruined in time of Henry VIII.
