Internal polling seen by i suggests security minister Tom Tugendhat would have been a more competitive candidate

The Tory candidate has also been accused by Labour of promoting hard-right and extremist content including by liking tweets promoting the views of Enoch Powell, promoting a conspiracy theory that the 2020 US election was stolen from Donald Trump and saying Islamophobic tweets are just “hurty words”. Tory sources indicate the Prime Minister’s time was better spent raising funds for the party’s candidates in general rather than taking a personal role in the mayoral election – in an apparent sign he does not believe she stands a realistic chance of winning.
A Tory strategist, meanwhile, said party figures in London think “she’s mad, can’t win and we should have found a better candidate – although no one agrees on who”. It showed that voters believed by a 60-40 margin that it was time for a change from Mr Khan and that introducing Mr Tugendhat as the candidate would lead to a “significantly tighter” race, as he polled 10 points better than a generic Tory.
