The Liverpool ECHO conducted a taste test of supermarket instant coffee - and one did not go down well
The Liverpool ECHO conducted a taste test of supermarket instant coffee to see if any stood out on price and flavour. Each reviewer was asked to taste test three cups of supermarket coffee from Aldi , Asda and Lidl . The benchmark was Nescafe Gold Blend, which costs £5.99 for a 200g jar in Tesco .
Olivia Williams said: "This coffee was my favourite out of the three I tried. It had a lovely coffee smell, strong taste and no odd aftertaste. I thought it was the most similar in taste to more expensive coffee brands." Ryan Paton said: "As one of those annoying coffee snobs, I don't normally opt for coffee beans over an instant roast from my supermarket shop. But, sadly for anyone who knows me, this Asda offering validated my insufferable point of view as it offered nothing in the way of taste or flavour.
"It was almost like a coffee for beginners taking their first steps into the caffeine-crazed world. The only way to compare it it's like when you see Guinness drinkers starting on Guinness and blackcurrant, or when people begin drinking a shandy, then a lager-top before acquiring the taste for a pint of beer. "
