We recommend in the race for Dallas City Council District 14 | Opinion
Ridley’s strongest challenge will come from realtor and attorney Amanda Schulz, 47, who reports that she has raised almost $50,000 for her campaign. Schulz has extensive experience serving public parks and outdoor spaces, having served as a Dallas Park and Recreation Board appointee where she worked with agencies like the Turtle Creek Conservancy, the Woodall Rodgers Foundation and the Circuit Trail Conservancy.
Schulz is an outspoken supporter of police and fire services, often repeating a talking point about “fully funding” those departments. But when pressed for details, Schulz isn’t clear about where she might produce new funding sources or what steps the council has taken to fund those departments already.
On many areas of policy, Schulz doesn’t disagree much with the incumbent. Her charge against Ridley, echoed by the third candidate in this race, Joseph F. Miller, is that he isn’t responsive to constituents and doesn’t listen to their concerns. While it certainly may be easy to find residents in District 14, or any other district, who can’t name their council member and feel disconnected from local government, Ridley is not isolated from constituents.
Miller, 75, is running on a mix of civic duty and nostalgia for Dallas’ past, which is admirable and relatable but doesn’t qualify him for the council. We welcome your thoughts in a letter to the editor. See the guidelines and
