We need a global permanent infrastructure of refugee resettlement

Palestinian children play with the help of games organised by humanitarian workers . It is estimated that moer than one million people are trapped in Gaza with few routes of escape from air strikes and aggression – and although humanitarian aid has started to arrive, it’s meagre compared to what is needed.– and some political leaders – are starting to be heard.

Our hostile border policies and neglect towards the asylum infrastructure have left us with a Government that is too often dragged kicking and screaming into humanitarian action. It only appears to act when opinion polls require them to. The absence of a proper safety net for refugees and asylum seekers means it does not respond swiftly and fairly – offering help in some conflicts, but not others.

The coalition of charities has suggested that the Gaza resettlement scheme could be based on the Homes for Ukraine one our Government introduced following Putin’s invasion last year. However, that only came after much pressure on the UK and this late-in-the-day offering was far from simple.

There are no short cuts to effective global humanitarian policies. Necessity is not the master of invention – it leaves families separated, humans trapped in conflict or stuck in homelessness. Then there is the long-term damage of refugees not having homes and the impact on their ability to feel part of our country, to work, learn English, build relationships. The government-manufactured catastrophe in our asylum and refugee responses is what damages diverse, rich, cohesive communities.
