Disabled people in the UK have the right to expect to be able to work, just like anyone else in our country.
a decade ago, creating a bureaucratic and stressful system. Now they say it has failed and needs to be replaced again. Round the policy roundabout we go.health assessment. Now they say PIP is broken too. That’s not a plan for disabled people. That’s chaos.
The truth is, making that situation real is going to take big changes. We will only fix the social security system if – as Beveridge wrote in his 1942 report – we have full employment and a well-functioning National Health Service.Waiting lists are at record levels, the country is sicker, and the disability employment rate is 54.2 percent – way below the national rate of 74.5 percent.
Labour have long called for changes to PIP so that we get more decisions right first time, deal with the backlog, and to make sure every aspect of the support for disabled people actually helps people get into work. The Government have produced a very thin green paper that is little more than a list of questions – but we will nonetheless judge any of their concrete proposals against that principle. Our plan to get our NHS functioning isn’t just a health plan, it’s a plan for our economy too – and 2 million more appointments will help Britain feel better and get back to work. That’s why: Our New Deal for Working People will improve workers’ rights for the first time in a generation.
We believe in the benefits of work for everyone – we are all better off with the autonomy and self‑determination that comes from good work. It’s time for a change – for a Labour Government that can bring us an end to the chaos and a plan for our future.Scottish Labour's Anas Sarwar tabled the motion after the collapse of the powersharing deal between the SNP and the Scottish Greens.
