The Government has announced fresh plans to tackle benefit cheats. As part of the move, investigators may trawl through benefit claimants' social media account for evidence of fraud. Readers have been giving their views on the plans Read more:

The Government has announced fresh plans to tackle benefit cheats, in a bid to stop around £2 billion of losses due to fraud and error over the next five years.

Investigations may involve a visit from an investigator in plain clothes, but social media profiles may also be used to check information. The most common type of benefit fraud is where the person claims unemployment benefits while having a job or where people say they live alone, when in fact they are supported by a partner. A total of 600 people were convicted of benefit fraud last year.

Beverley Sargeant wrote: "I have no issues with this, the people who feign illness and play the system are the ones that ruin it for genuine claimants. They often trip themselves up by over sharing or attention seeking on social media and I hope they catch them all. But Jean Irene Kearon said she was concerned about people with invisible illnesses. She wrote: "Not all illnesses are visible so people should not judge others. I have nothing to hide but that is an invasion of privacy. How would they like someone checking all their stuff?"
