A Northern Ireland dad has opened up about being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis almost 30 years ago.
Ian said: “For the whole time I’ve had this condition – which is a long time – there’s been nothing I’ve been able to do about it. There was a certain amount of frustration involved in that. “My hope at the minute is that the Octopus trial will lead to researchers finding a treatment that will slow down MS progression, and I will be able to maintain the quality of life that I have now.
Ian experienced what he later discovered were his first MS symptoms in 1982. He was admitted to hospital after losing all feeling in both his hands and starting to regularly trip over. “But on the other side of things, I’m not great in the cold either. My circulation seems to be quite poor. My left side is really affected. I have spasticity* in my left leg and drop foot.
“I think back to what I could do a year ago or two years ago and compare. I know people whose degeneration has been a lot quicker.” Multiple drugs are tested at once, rather than testing one drug at a time against a placebo. This method works up to three times faster than traditional trials. “It doesn’t take up much of your time either. I probably go to the site about once a month now, although it was more often when I first started.
“This trial represents a major step forward for MS research globally, and we’re really pleased that both medical professionals and members of the MS community in Northern Ireland will be a part of that.”
