The Israeli prime minister's address comes at a fraught time in U.S. politics and as he faces domestic and international pressure over the war in Gaza.
Washington — Israel i Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is addressing a joint meeting of Congress on Wednesday afternoon, hoping to shore up support for Israel 's 10-month war against Hamas in Gaza. 'We meet today at a crossroads of history. Our world is in upheaval,' Netanyahu said. 'In the Middle East, Iran's axis of terror confronts America, Israel and our Arab friends. This is not a clash of civilizations. It's a clash between barbarism and civilization.
Senate president pro tempore, Democratic Sen. Patty Murray of Washington, was next in line to fill her seat behind Netanyahu, but she was among the lawmakers who skipped the address. Sen. Ben Cardin, a Maryland Democrat, stepped in to preside over the joint meeting. Powerful Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, also was absent. She met with family members of Israeli hostages on Wednesday morning. 'Let's hope Netanyahu opens his eyes.
