‘We’re not going away’, say campaigners - urging Government to set aside time for showdown in Parliament on pensions saga

Women Against State Pension Inequality has written an open letter to Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt – urging the minister to “urgently” set aside time for a vote on the issue.refused to commit to such a scheme on Sunday

Angela Madden, the Waspi chair, said: “It is up to Parliament to determine the compensation package. But MPs can only do that if the Government makes time for the necessary debates and votes in the Commons.” “It is just not good enough for the government to slope away for a long Easter break in the hope that Waspi women will go away. We won’t.”More than 19,000 people have signed Waspi’s petition demanding that the Parliament addresses the issue. It states that MPs “must urgently have the opportunity to debate and vote” on compensation.

He added: “We want to resolve it as quickly as we can, but there’s no secret vault of money. The money we would pay in compensation has to come from other taxpayers, so we do have to take time to get this fair.”Labour has also shied away from promising compensation, and party chair Anneliese Dodds told the BBC on Sunday that she could not say how “compensation should work”.

The Waspi group says millions of women who were born in the 1950s lost out as they were not properly informed their state pension would go up from 60 to 65, in line with men. The age was later increased to 66 for both sexes,. It is due to go up to 67 between 2026-28. “These millions of women worked, cared for families, and supported communities all their lives. They deserve the dignity of fast compensation,” said Mr Aldous.
