The Scottish Government plans to downgrade five out of eight neonatal intensive care units, creating three super units in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen.

A former SNP health secretary yesterday accused his party colleagues of “betrayal” as they plan to downgrade the country’s top neonatal unit. Campaigners have raised fears the move will cost babies’ lives.

And in a dig at the current SNP Lanarkshire politicians, Neil stated: “I was elected on a pledge to protect local health services like Monklands A&E. Its pioneering work has now been adopted by many other hospitals around the UK and attempts are being made to replicate it in Europe. Currently, a petition opposing its downgrading has attracted 16,200 signatures. Now the race is on to maintain the unit and retain the expertise of the staff who work there. She said: “It is simply disgraceful that the SNP government is ploughing ahead with the dangerous downgrading of the award-winning neonatal unit at University Hospital Wishaw against local and medical opposition.

Lynne is organising a rally at the Scottish Parliament on Thursday and it will be followed by a Hands Around Wishaw event on November 17 – World Prematurity Day – during which parents will link hands around the hospital in a bid to drive home the message that it needs to be saved. “They have won awards for their neurodevelopment care and it is a case of within the first 72-78 hours there is as little handling as possible.
