Freedom. It’s a word that Claire Choisne, the creative director of Boucheron, peppers throughout her speech. Her creative wizardry, which has led to actual flowers, aeronautical gel and industrial holographic coatings being incorporated into the most precious – and poetic – of designs, relies on her ability to think outside the box.
As we sit in the ultra-chic surroundings of Boucheron’s private Parisian apartment, overlooking a bustling Place Vendôme, it is already hard to recall the first lockdown of 2020, when the world was ordered to retreat indoors, and uncertainty was the order of the day. Fortunately for Choisne, she was able to spend lockdown at her home on the Portuguese coast. Despite the location, however, it was not a situation she cherished.
“The pandemic and its lack of freedom was not cool for me,” says Choisne, with wry understatement. Confined physically, she let her imagination run riot. “I became obsessed with the idea of travel, and travel everywhere – beaches, forests, deserts, mountains.”This virtual globe-trotting resulted in Boucheron’s latest high jewellery collection, Ailleurs, which translates as “elsewhere”.
This liberty is counterbalanced by a unified palette – browns and soft whites in humble materials such as shell, rattan and wood, as well as precious diamonds and gold – and the mastery of the hands that bring her designs to life. A large flower of paper-thin rosewood petals and quivering diamond stamens sits on the shoulder, held in place by concealed magnets. The fronds of a sea fan coral are rendered in mother-of-pearl and diamonds, and can be worn in the hair or as a brooch.
