Pies are a British classic and we want to know what gets your vote when it comes to the best filling
The humble pie dates back centuries and the very first example of meat in pastry goes back to the Romans, with fruit pies coming along much later. It's reported that Queen Elizabeth I was first served a cherry pie in the 16th century. But since then the British pie has evolved and now you can get pretty much anything inside a pastry crust including chicken tikka and mac and cheese.
Of course, it was here in Lancashire that the butter pie was invented. Also known as Friday Pie, the delicious dish was created by Catholics in Preston who didn't eat meat on Fridays so chose to substitute beef with butter. It's grown to be a Lancashire staple and the ingredients are pretty simple - potato, butter, onion, salt and pepper.
