Sun Run: Students also volunteer, including some from Killarney Secondary, York House, St. George’s, as well as Boy Scouts and Girl Guides.

“We’re firing on all cylinders,” says Tim Hopkins, who is race director for the Sun Run. “We’ve got a great group of volunteers dedicated to seeing this through. We’ve got people who just plan the entertainment, people who coordinate the volunteers, volunteers who work with the elite athletes, who work with wheelchair athletes.”

“Typically, it’s a lot of groups, but we sign up a lot of individuals online. People can come out anywhere from a four- or eight-hour shifts, or we have multiple shifts in the weeks leading up to the race where people volunteer time in the office, prepping race packages and things like that.”Article content

He finds a reward in “helping people accomplish something that they may not have thought possible. Sure, we have the elites who are running under 30 minutes. But I remember last year watching the last runners come in, a grandmother with her grandchildren. And the fact that anyone of any age can accomplish something such as running, walking, or making their way through a 10K course, that’s where the satisfaction comes for me.”People start showing up an hour later.

“It’s just a matter of telling people what to do,” he said. “I have a radio to communicate with the people on the PA system, so I’ll say, ‘Okay guys, one minute to start.’ I’ve used the megaphone a couple of times just to say, ‘Okay guys, let’s go back to the start line and clear the street.”
