Sara Khokhar of Hightower High School and Emily Wang, a Clear Creek High School student,...

“As I started getting more involved with my school’s Red Cross Club, I heard about the international humanitarian law program,” Khokhar said. “I joined the program and I worked in a team of amazing people where we set up social media posts, games and simulations and events that were centered around international humanitarian law. Over time, it not only helped increase my knowledge of what international humanitarian law is, but it helped me gain amazing leadership skills.

Wang and Khokhar are part of the Texas Gulf Coast Region and the Southwest & Rocky Mountain Division. Their past campaigns involved educating fellow advocates and the community on international humanitarian law through activities, social media posts and outreach. Throughout the simulation, Khokhar reminded people that there’s something that could protect their cup towers or “cultural property” from destruction. If participants identified that as the Blue Shield emblem, their tower would be protected.

One aspect of the summit was public speaking, which Khokhar said she has struggled with in the past. Despite her trepidation, she took the opportunity to interview Phyllis Harris, the general counsel of the American Red Cross. But she found ways to make it interesting. One of the virtual events was a discussion on how “Harry Potter” related to IHL, examining the violations of international humanitarian law depicted in the movies. Wang also held a career panel with Dr. Nikki Reisch, director of climate and energy at the Center of International Environmental Law.
