A volunteer with an archaeological group in Italy stumbled upon 2,000-year-old coins in an Italian forest.

how a volunteer from an archaeological group had opted to go on a hike in a forest in Livorno — a port city located in the Italian region of Tuscany — where they noticed something glinting in the dirt.

That “something,” details Live Science, ended up being 175 silver ancient coins, a number of which dated as far back to roughly 157 B.C. and which are worth tens of thousands of dollars today. “The coins [had] definitely been hidden — they constituted a ‘treasure’ or piggy bank,” says archeologist Lorella Alderighi. “The easiest way to hide valuables [back then] was to bury them underground, away from homes where no one could find them.”this Ancient Roman was hiding the coins was, Alderighi explains they may have been the savings of a soldier who was ultimately killed in battle.

“A number of people at times of crisis buried their stash of money and for whatever reason were prevented from retrieving it,” he explains.how a group of archaeologists excavated the area where the coins were found.
