Chicago Mayor Dever welcomed Cardinal Mundelein upon his arrival home to Chicago at Garfield Blvd. and the Baltimore and Ohio train tracks on May 11, 1924. A frantic search of the kitchen at the University Club of Chicago revealed that Crones, an anarchist who held anti-religious beliefs, was missing. The reason more did not die was because another cook, who did not like the looks of four other cans of poisoned stock Crones had prepared, poured them down the drain, thus diluting the fatal brew.
Closing the event in the village that had been named for him, Mundelein thanked the crowd of Catholics and non-Catholics assembled, “Irrespective of creed or station in life, I believe every one will agree with me that the days of the Eucharistic Congress were a time of much grace and many blessings and that at this time the Lord surely walked again among his people.
