THE Queen and Prince Philip spent years living in glittering palaces - but her “happiest” time was when they lived a relatively “normal” life in a villa in Malta.The palatial home was built in 1900, with six bedrooms, six bathrooms and a grand 'sala nobile' living room.
The limestone villa is now set to become a museum, after falling into a state of disrepair over the years - and theAfter their wedding in 1947, the then-Princess Elizabeth and Philip spent months at a time at Villa Guardamangia between 1949 and 1951.The villa was loaned to the couple by Philip’s uncle, Lord Louis Mountbatten, who rented it from the Schembri family.
The couple, who had welcomed son Charles in 1948, were said to have left him with his grandma, the later Queen Mother, during their visits to Malta. The first floor of the home will be recreated to how it looked when the young Elizabeth and Philip lived there, in the five-year renovation project.The restoration project is being done by the Maltese government after they acquired the building.
