SAN ANTONIO — Before tipoff of the San Antonio Spurs-Dallas Mavericks season opener on Wednesday night at Frost Bank Center, the hype that came with Victor Wembanyama’s entry into the NBA Draft seems to have been undersold. His “Did Wemby really do that?” moments in the preseason had raised expectations for the regular season that matched those that LeBron James brought to his rookie season with the Cleveland Cavaliers exactly 20 years ago.
Strangely enough, those matched Hall of Fame Spurs big man Tim Duncan’s scoring output in his very first regular-season game, a 106-97 Spurs victory over the Denver Nuggets on Halloween in 1997. Duncan also made 6-of-9 shots on his way to 15 points. He also grabbed 10 rebounds and had two assists and two blocks, whereas Wembanyama grabbed only five rebounds, had only two assists and just a single blocked shot, which came on Dallas’ very first possession of the game.
