Colombia and Venezuela reopen about 2,220-kilometer-long border after seven years, a step further in normalising relations with hopes to enable billions of dollars in trade
Colombian President Gustavo Petro next to Venezuelan Transport Minister Ramon Velasquez and Tachira State Governor Freddy Bernal watch as the first truck from Venezuela crosses the Simon Bolivar International Bridge from San Antonio del Tachira in Venezuela to Cucuta in Colombia, during a ceremony to officially reopen their land border — closed since 2019 — on September 26, 2022.
The re-opening — which will allow goods like coal, toilet paper and fruit to move through crossings between the Colombian city of Cucuta and the Venezuelan state of Tachira — was a key campaign promise of Colombia's new leftist President Gustavo Petro. "I want the first people who benefit to be those who live on either side of the border, those who risked ...gangs of all kinds, multicriminals who could kill them, who could rape them," said Petro in later remarks, referring to dozens of irregular crossings controlled by crime gangs and home to smuggling and drug trafficking.
