A plant-based diet is associated with a reduced the risk of heart disease, cancer and death, according to a large-scale review published Wednesday. The research, which appears in the journal PLOS ONE, analyzed the results of nearly 50 studies published from 2000 to 2023. The studies examined the health effects of either vegetarian diets or vegan regimens, which restrict any food derived from animals, including dairy.
One possible reason is that many fruits and vegetables are high in anti-inflammatory nutrients and antioxidants, which can reduce plaque buildup in the arteries. Plant-based diets also tend to be high in fiber, which helps lower bad cholesterol, said Brie Turner-McGrievy, a professor of health promotion, education and behavior at the University of South Carolina.
