Van Lawrence is running for District 32 in the Alaska House.
He said he is running because he believes people in the Interior deserve better from their representatives. “I’ve been involved in community service since I’ve been here. I’ve been a member of the Fairbanks Kiwanis Club since 1980. I believe in community service and I believe in this community.”
Lawrence believes the people’s needs are more important than partisan politics. “Serving on the borough assembly for six years has taught me how to listen to people, and being on a non-partisan assembly and then serving as a commissioner on the Alaska Public Offices Commission has taught me how to rise above partisan politics and work together with people to achieve a consensus and reach solutions.
He would like to see Alaska diversify its economy. “Right now we’re totally dependent on the energy sector for 80, or at least 80% of our state revenue and a quarter of our jobs - and we need to, I think, increase manufacturing in this state.
