SAN JOSE — Just like last season, Valley Christian hosted Wilcox in the season opener for both teams. But this time the outcome was quite a bit different.
Wilcox broke one long touchdown run out of its veer option offense. Quarterback Tyson Bonilla raced 45 yards for a TD in the first quarter. After a defensive penalty moved the ball half the distance on the conversion attempt, the Chargers went for two with Elijah Walker punching it in to make it 8-0.
Three penalties prevented the Chargers from picking up a first down and getting out of the hole and they were forced to punt from their own end zone. Valley took over on the 29 and needed only four plays to score on a 5-yard run by Marcel Leggett to take a 13-8 lead. Defenses ruled in the second half. The only score, the game-winning field goal, was set up after Wilcox fumbled a punt and Valley Christian recovered at the Wilcox 8-yard line.
