For the second time in two years, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors is considering appointing someone to lead a district that they have lived in for less than a month.

On Tuesday, the board will interview candidates to serve as District 2’s newest supervisor, a position that has been vacant since Supervisor Richard Valle passed away in February. One of the leading contenders is Ariana Casanova, a political coordinator and field representative for the Service Employees International Union.

Jason Bezis, an attorney for the Alameda County Taxpayers Association, filed a public comment on March 26 arguing that the board was violating its own rules, and that Casanova should not be considered. Alameda County Administrative Code requires candidates to have lived in their district for at least a year to be eligible to run in an election. Although the board is appointing the new supervisor, Bezis argues that their votes constitute an election.

Although Richard Valle’s term extends another three years, whoever is appointed by the board would have to run in the next election in March of 2024. The winner of that election would then serve two years before another election is held in 2026 for a full six-year term.“I’m aware that the County has already examined the issue of residency, as have legal teams retained by my supporters and my candidate committee,” Casanova wrote in a statement.
