University of San Diego pitcher Brycen Mautz’s 21st birthday celebration lasted well into night, when he received the best present anyone could imagine — being selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the second round of the 2022 MLB Draft.
“Today was incredible,” Mautz texted amid a chaotic scene that included family and a handful of friends and teammates. “It was so cool to receive probably the best birthday present of all time. Perfect end to one of the best days of my life. “I couldn’t be more proud of Brycen getting drafted by one of the most respected organizations in baseball,” said USD head coach Brock Ungricht, who credited Toreros pitching coach Matt Florer with Mautz’s development. “Coach Florer has done one hell of a job on helping Brycen achieve this great accomplishment.
