'The point is that the job of (the U.S. men) ... requires a higher level of skill based on speed and strength than does the job of (the U.S. women),' U.S. Soccer said in a motion filed Monday night.
The women turned their warmup shirts inside out Wednesday night so the four stars that represent their World Cup titles were visible but the U.S. Soccer crest was not. The protest was in response to a U.S. Soccer court filing earlier this week that characterized the women as inferior to male players.
In the closing seconds of the game against Japan, U.S. Soccer president Carlos Cordeiro issued a statement apologizing to the players and announcing a change in lawyers.
