Speaking from his home near Tel Aviv, Dr Liel said: “The Americans are setting the agenda. The political and diplomatic agenda for after the war, and maybe even during the war. Dr Liel, who served in his nation’s diplomatic service for 30 years, is the most senior political figure to have publicly stated doubts about Mr Netanyahu’s future.
As for when Mr Netanyahu could be removed from office, Dr Liel said: “As I see it, his political career is finished, but we will probably have to wait for the end of the war to consider who takes over.”Looking towards peace and an end to the conflict, Dr Liel claimed there is one man who could revitalise hopes for a two-state solution: Marwan Barghouti.
But Dr David Roberts, a middle east specialist at King’s College in London, said it was not as simple as one figure being able to solve such a historic issue of peace between the Israelis and Palestinians. He returned to Israel under the terms of the Oslo Accords, a peace deal between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organisation orchestrated by US President Bill Clinton.
