British banks ‘strong and robust’, MPs told, but volatility could expose weakness in financial system and raise costs for UK borrowers
Fed chairman Jerome Powell said it had “seriously considered” pausing interest rate rises in the days running up to its latest meeting. “We will continue to closely monitor conditions in the banking system and are prepared to use all of our tools as needed to keep it safe and sound,” he said.
