'This is an extremely hostile environment where you would have to put armed contractors on the ground with a licence to kill,' says one expert

“There is an engineering battalion in the US that specialises in building this sort of infrastructure, so it’s something that they have trained for, especially for inaccessible terrain,” he said, citing previous amphibious landings as part of aid missions in Sierra Leone and Somalia. Operating in a war zone will also create security challenges that could test the US’s “no boots on the ground” policy, Dr Krieg believes.

The Israeli Defence Forces has control in many of Gaza’s coastal areas, said Dr Krieg, and the US has contacts with Hamas that should prevent the group launching attacks on aid missions. “It needs to happen as soon as possible as the situation continues to deteriorate and a large portion of the population is in danger of starvation.”

“I don’t see troops with boots on the ground in the Gaza strip distributing humanitarian aid, and nobody wants Hamas to,” he said, claiming that the group has been able to take control of aid supplies. “And when we talk about international legitimacy, we are talking first of all about American legitimacy”.to facilitate aid deliveries to Gaza, and resorted to air dropping aid against a backdrop of dire assessments from relief groups.
