NEW YORK - Emissions from heat-trapping greenhouses gases in the US inched up in 2022, but at a rate slower than overall economic growth, according to a new report by an independent energy research firm.

The report is based on preliminary economic and energy data from the US government that will be finalised later this year. But the US did not return to the period of 2019 to 2020, when emissions were declining in absolute terms. They also declined from 2014 to 2017. In total, emissions from electricity generation, which accounts for nearly 30 per cent of the total, were down by 1 per cent.Emissions from the building sector, for example, rose six per cent due to higher energy consumption for heating in homes, as 2022 reported below-average winter temperatures.
