China claims sovereignty over most of the South China Sea, despite an international arbitral court's 2016 ruling to the contrary.
The Philippine Coast Guard has published images showing environmental destruction allegedly caused by Chinese fishing in the contested South China Sea.The photos 'document the destructive actions of Chinese fishermen' at Scarborough Shoal, which Manila calls Bajo de Masinloc, from December 2016 to 2022, coast guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela wrote in a social media post on Monday.
He cited examples such as damage to coral reefs and 'substantial harvest of endangered sea turtles, coral, and giant clams.'During a press conference on Monday Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin responded to Manila's claim that Chinese maritime forces had severely damaged reefs in waters off the contested Spratly Islands' Thitu Island.
