Urban One to acquire four more Houston radio stations, including classic rock station The Eagle 106.9
Cathy Hughes, who founded the company that would become Urban One in 1980, is said to be the wealthiest Black woman in the U.S. behind Oprah Winfrey.Urban One, a Maryland-based media company"representing Black culture," will bolster its presence on Houston's airwaves with the acquisition of Cox Media Group's local radio cluster, the two companies said.: KKBQ-FM, branded as 93Q Country; KTHT-FM, also known as Country Legends 97.
Two of its radio stations are in Houston, said president and CEO Alfred Liggins, Hughes' son, in a statement, and Urban One considers building its broadcast reach here to be a long-term strategic goal. "Our current stations 97.9 'The Box' and Majic 102.1 are market leaders, and combined with our new stations, allow us to strengthen our business footprint while offering the Houston community more diversified music and special event programming," Liggins said.The sale is subject to approval from the Federal Communications Commission, and Urban One and Cox will continue operating as usual until then.
"While it's difficult to part ways with the valued team members in Houston, we know they will continue their success as part of Urban One," said Dan York, Cox Media Group president and CEO. The deal comes as radio fends off challenges from streaming services such as Spotify and Apple Music, as well as a battle for listeners from podcast producers.
