UK supermarkets are rationing sales of fruit and vegetables, with a customer limit on purchases likely to last "weeks", retailers have warned. A shortage of tomatoes due to a combination of badThe shortage has seen some UK supermarket shelves left bare of tomatoes, as well as dwindling stocks of some other fresh produce.
It is understood that retailers believe the problems stem from poor yields on the continent and north Africa, and that supplies will improve in the coming days or weeks. An Asda spokesman said: “Like other supermarkets, we are experiencing sourcing challenges on some products that are grown in southern Spain and north Africa.
“We have introduced a temporary limit of three of each product on a very small number of fruit and vegetable lines, so customers can pick up the products they are looking for.” Some shelves at the Asda supermarket in Arnold are bare as of Tuesday afternoon. It's also been reported that, from Wednesday , will only allow customers to buy a maximum of two each of tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, and peppers.
