Sean Flanigan, head of hair, and Nicki Ledermann, head of makeup on The Gilded Age, talk us through the show’s beauty looks, and how to recreate them.

NL: I took my biggest inspiration from paintings by Realist painters such as John Singer Sargent and James Abbott McNeill Whistler. I wanted the cast to look like a portrait painting, to evoke the aesthetic and color palette of that era.

NL: In the late 1800s, makeup on women was frowned upon, as it was reserved only for stage actors and prostitutes. Creating the look for our cast was often an interpretation, being true to the basic shapes, textures and techniques of the time, but often adapted and enhanced to please the modern eye without losing the feel and authenticity of the time.

NL: The biggest challenge was the pandemic. Our actors had to be masked at all times as well. In between takes, the masks had to go back on and touching up the makeup became sometimes quite difficult. We used a lot of stains so that the “smearing” under a sweaty mask would be kept to a minimum. NL: For the old money class, the makeup is very sheer and clean, keeping the complexion pale and powdery with only a hint of hues on cheeks and lips, finished with barely any eye accentuation, if at all. The new money is more rebellious, in fact, eager to push the boundaries, to show the old timers that a new era has begun, and [that] we are here to stay whether you like it or not.
