The Dallas Morning News obtained a copy of the waiver from a student-athlete at SMU and published it on Monday.was developed by SMU's Office of Legal Counsel and, once signed, waives the students' right to litigation.

The students must digitally sign next to a line that reads,"[I] further agree to voluntarily assume all risks related to the COVID-19 virus."SMU athletic director Rick Hartthat the waiver serves"multiple purposes," including informing student-athletes regarding potential dangers and mitigating the institution's risk.

A significant number of student-athletes planned to return to campus on Monday, with a second wave of students arriving next month.that if they refuse, it will not affect their eligibility or scholarship, but they may have to file a medical hardship waiver.The only other known instance of a U.S. college or university currently requiring a similar disclaimer is Ohio State University.
