This year, the 6-foot-3 Watts is back alongside senior nickelback Jahdae Barron, one of last year’s pleasant surprises, with a good blend of sturdy veterans and rising underclassmen surrounding them. Senior Jerrin Thompson is locked in at boundary safety after starting 12 of 13 games last season while setting career highs with 83 tackles, seven pass breakups and one interception. Thompson also had the team’s top coverage grade, per Pro Football Focus.
"You love experience in the backend and we felt like that was something we needed," Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said."Gavin was a high-level player at Wake Forest, you see his confidence already on the field."Sophomore safety Michael Taaffe, a former walk-on, and corner/nickelback Jaylon Guilbeau earned some playing time last season, and the latter has especially impressed coaches this offseason.
