LancsLive obtained figures which show that in an 18-month period, in Blackburn with Darwen, the water firm was ordered to pay £156,640
Calls have been made to bring water companies back under public ownership after exclusive statistics show that United Utilities was told to pay £156,640 as a result of roadwork errors across two East Lancashire towns.
United Utilities was also ordered to pay 224 separate penalties, under Section 74 of the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991, during the same time frame. Of those, the water firm was fined £122,250 for leaving more than five signs, lights or guards at the site of roadworks on 163 occasions. In a statement a spokesperson for United Utilities said: “We only ever work in the highway when we have to carry out essential maintenance and we always do our best to ensure the work is of a high standard and minimises any disruption to road users. Across the North West we have enough water pipes and sewers to wrap three times around the world if they were laid end to end.
