The International Association of Machinists blocked United Airlines from reducing weekly hours for thousands of workers, but nothing has kept the airline from doing the same for its lowest-paid workers, employed in its catering kitchens
The cut in weekly hours came in mid-May, although United received $3.5 billion in CARES Act grants as well as a $1.5 billion CARES Act loan. Under the act, companies cannot furlough workers or reduce wages before Oct. 1.
“It puts workers in the worst of positions: most will not qualify for unemployment because they’re still employed, but they’ll be working 25% fewer hours which will make it more difficult for people who were already living paycheck to paycheck,” Cohorst said. “As part of our proactive cost-cutting measures across the company to help us survive the worst crisis to ever hit the US aviation industry, several work groups, including catering and those in our management and administrative functions, had changes made to their work schedules,” Rivas said. “This reduction in hours is in full compliance with the CARES Act.”
United is the only major airline that directly employs catering workers. Other airlines provide meals from contractors who operate catering kitchens.
