The centerpiece of NASA's moon-focused Artemis program, the massive Space Launch System rocket, made its first public appearance Thursday evening when it rolled out of its historic hangar at Kennedy Space Center.

— the massive Space Launch System rocket — made its first public appearance Thursday evening when it rolled out of its historic hangar at Kennedy Space Center.

The NASA-branded hardware will run through checkouts before one major pre-launch test: a"wet dress rehearsal" that will fully fuel the rocket and allow teams to run through a mock countdown of sorts. If everything checks out, the rocket will roll back to the VAB sometime next month for more work, then launch the Artemis I mission no earlier than June.

The roll to the launchpad is a short one – about 4.3 miles in total – but it's a trip that takes 11 hours. That's because the rocket relies onOnce the SLS rocket was outside its protective home inside the VAB's High Bay 3 for the first time, the roll process was paused to allow for the retraction of the crew access arm. Then teams pushed ahead down the"crawlerway."

The purpose of"wet dress rehearsal" is to simulate day-of-launch operations as closely as possible. That includes fueling the rocket and proceeding through a simulated launch countdown. Also on-hand for the rollout was Tom Stafford, a former Air Force general who flew Apollo 10 and the first meeting of Americans and Russians in space known as Apollo-Soyuz. The 91-year-old is one of 24 people to have traveled to the moon.
