Ulla Johnson's fall 2022 collection is in! See every look from the runway:
There’s been a lot written about the lack of big names at this New York Fashion Week. But maybe it’s time for a reevaluation of who gets considered one of those big names. That thought definitely came to mind walking into the New York Public Library for Ulla Johnson’s show this morning, with its installation of Alma Allen’s sculptures and performance by PawPaw Rod.
She’s done it by making pretty clothes, the relatability and approachability of which are driven home by the crowds of women wearing them at her shows. Johnson’s specialty is printed dresses with a flourish of ruffles on the skirt or poufed sleeves, but her business has grown of late to include many other categories. There was a new optical range on the runway today, and a new denim offering too.
Backstage Johnson mentioned Allen’s sculptures as an influence; his polymorphous bronzes, recently on view in New York, inspired the collection’s metallic textiles and bold but graceful volumes. The dresses over wide-leg pants, a new development, had a more amorphous starting point; they reminded Johnson of her early days as a New York City kid, going to ’90s raves.
