Stuffed among Nikolaeva’s possessions were five paintings — which she will display during a new exhibit that will premiere on Saturday, April 16, at Collage: A Place for Art and Culture, a San Pedro arts venue. The exhibit, which runs through April 27, will also feature antique women’s dresses and gowns, along with textile art, antique Ukrainian Easter eggs and other handicrafts.
Yet, the war has also taken its toll: President Volodymyr Zelenskiy estimated Ukraine’s military casualties at 2,500 to 3,000 dead and about 10,000 injured, according to excerpts from an interview with CNN’s “State of the Union,” set to be broadcast Sunday. Ukrainian art gallery owner and art history teacher Nadiya Nikolaeva fled Kiev last month after Russia’s invasion. With her she brought Ukrainian paintings along with antique gowns and textiles, now on display at Collage gallery in San Pedro on Thursday, April 14, 2022. She brought the rare book which gives a full history of Ukrainian costumes starting in the 11th century. The show opens Easter weekend.
